Khan Murjan, a traditional souk with an Islamic theme and architecture is the latest addition to the Wafi Collection. This unique marketplace environment was built with inspiration taken from an original 14th century souk designed and built in Baghdad. Khan Murjan covers 50,000 square feet based over 2 subterranean levels and features more than 150 bazaar shops with vendors from all across the Arab world.
The superb attention to detail and authenticity are to be admired, with a beautiful mix of carved stone, mosaic tiles and handcrafted ornamentation, woodcarvings and marble floors. The construction of the Khan Murjan interior was brought together by a selection of the most talented craftsmen from Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco, Jordan, Oman and Afghanistan.
Set amongst the impressive architecture and craftsmanship is the amazing stained glass ceiling, measuring 64 metres in length and 4 metres in width. The intricate coloured glasswork depicts the stories of ancient Arab traders moving goods from overseas and across the desert to trade and exchange with other merchants and travelers in the region.
At the heart of the souk there is an open-roofed courtyard restaurant. Offering protection from a possible sand or occasional rainstorm, the courtyard features an amazing retractable roof as well as full air-conditioning for the warmer months.
We think Khan Murjan should be on everyone’s agenda when they come to Dubai. It features outstanding architectural features and beauty as well as providing the extraordinary experience of an authentic Arabic souk with less than authentic but very welcomed air-conditioning. For a real taste of original Middle East shopping, this is a must see place and of course is complemented by one of Dubai’s premier shopping locations in the Wafi itself.
Khan Murjan - A traditional Arabic Experience at the heart of Wafi is open 10am until 10pm and until midnight on Thursday and Fridays.
